JS MUSIQUE was founded on June 29, 1984, 42 years ago. Like BG, which we visited last week, JS is also a matter of initials (it must have been the trend back then!).

Jean-Louis Julliard, a tireless handyman and all-terrain repairman, contributed the "J" from his last name, while Pierre Scharff, an inspired salesman with a reassuringly affable manner, contributed the "S."

JS MUSIQUE was therefore first and foremost a story of friendship and complementary skills.

The small shop on Rue de la Charité quickly moved to larger premises on Rue Duhamel in the 1990s. Partnerships with the conservatory, and more generally with all the wind instrument professionals in the region and beyond, rapidly propelled the modest company to become a key player in the industry, for both brass and woodwind instruments.

When the two founders exercised their right to a well-deserved retirement six years ago, three saxophonists in their forties decided to take up the mantle to ease the burden of their exciting, yet oh so exhausting, lives as performing artists.

Manu, Arnaud, and Jacques are now the proud owners of the shop. The three met at the conservatory; Manu and Jacques were even briefly my students before Manu became my colleague for over two decades.

Their quartet, Heavy Fingers, was for a long time a must-have among jazz groups dedicated (among other things) to musical theater productions. Suffice it to say, they are all experts and top-notch musicians long before they are business owners. This undoubtedly explains why the handover went so smoothly and why JS Musique has remained the favorite music shop of Lyon's residents.

With five luthiers in the workshop and two booksellers in the dedicated space, JS is more than ever the saxophone class's key partner. A guided tour with the students was therefore essential. Shop, workshop, bookstore, practice studios, showroom—a good hour to explore and understand these invaluable partners who are an integral part of a professional musician's life.

Thank you to the whole team! Thank you, JS Musique!
